California’s highways and byways lead visitors along 1,200 miles of coastline. These ubiquitous trails climb to mountain bike country in Marin County; and over to the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park tucked into the High Sierra; over to Vichy Hot Springs in Ukiah, the only carbonated hot springs in North America; a look at Shasta Dam, higher than Niagara Falls; and to the dramatic Merced River, which winds through Yosemite National Park.

Learn about California’s coastal redwoods on the historic Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad in Felton, one of America’s last steam-powered, narrow-gauge, passenger railroads with year-round service. The train climbs one of the steepest narrow-gauge grades to a cathedral grove of redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Or, if you want to be the driver instead of the passenger, run a locomotive at the Portola Railroad Museum, 45 miles north of Truckee in Plumas County. Sit in the engineer’s seat and operate a full-size locomotive, then browse among 40 locomotives and 100 cars and cabooses.

California’s northwest coast is a wonder of rugged  beauty at Klamath, on stunning Redwood Highway U.S. 101, but is rivaled by the tree-lined Klamath River. Take a 55-mile round-trip jet-boat tour with narration that covers the vibrant wildlife and local Native American culture. The Klamath culture trail continues to the End of the Trail Indian Museum, which is filled with one of the largest and finest collections of artifacts and basketry in the West.

In November when snow has settled comfortably on Mammoth Lakes, Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino National Forest, bikes and boats are put aside for cross-country gear, snowshoes, ice skates, flashy snowboards and high-performance, muscle-burning, free-stylin’ downhill skis. Many of the world’s great skiers developed skills in these fabled mountains, while others are happy playing on snowbikes and snow tubes or rolling down a steep, snowy Zorb course strapped into a huge inflatable ball.

Rappel by rope in the Mother Lode Gold Country, 165 feet into the heart of Moaning Cavern, one of California’s underground wonders, and explore its undeveloped passages and chambers. Further south, in the eastern Mojave Desert, time and an ancient ocean formed the otherworldly Mitchell Caverns.
